The question comes up in every e-commerce forum: “Can I sell on Shopee from the US?” The answer is yes — with specific constraints that most guides gloss over. Here is what actually works, based on structured data from sellers who are doing it.

The Cross-Border Reality on Shopee

Shopee supports cross-border selling on most of its 8 country platforms. The key distinction: you ship from an overseas warehouse (or directly from China) to Shopee’s local logistics hub, and Shopee handles last-mile delivery. This is functionally similar to Amazon FBA — you do not need a local address or local bank account in Vietnam or Thailand.

The cross-border program is not available on all Shopee sites equally. As of mid-2026: Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand support cross-border selling with full logistics integration. Indonesia has tighter restrictions and requires local entity registration for most categories. Taiwan and Brazil have specific category limitations.

# Validate cross-border availability for your product category:
# shopee_category_request → check if cross-border sellers are active in this category
# shopee_product_request → look for "shop_location" field indicating seller origin

The Three Things You Need to Get Right

1. Logistics integration.

Shopee’s cross-border logistics program (SLS — Shopee Logistics Service) handles warehousing, customs clearance, and last-mile delivery. You ship your inventory to Shopee’s origin warehouse (typically in Shenzhen or Yiwu for China-based sellers), and Shopee handles everything from there to the customer.

From a US seller’s perspective: you can source from 1688, have your supplier ship directly to Shopee’s China warehouse, and never touch the product. The logistics chain is: 1688 supplier → Shopee China warehouse → Shopee local hub → customer.

2. Pricing for local markets.

The single biggest mistake cross-border sellers make on Shopee is pricing products at US-market levels. Shopee buyers in Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines have significantly lower purchasing power than Amazon US buyers. A product that sells comfortably at $24.99 on Amazon may need to be priced at $12.99-16.99 on Shopee Vietnam to be competitive.

Pull category pricing data before setting your prices. Look at the price distribution of the top 50 products in your target category on the target Shopee site. Your price should fall within the 40th-70th percentile — competitive enough to attract clicks, high enough to leave margin after cross-border logistics costs.

3. Local-language content.

Your listing must be in the local language. Shopee’s search algorithm heavily weights local-language keywords. A listing in English on Shopee Thailand will be invisible to Thai buyers searching in Thai. The fix is not to hire a translator — it is to use keyword data to identify the top 20 search terms in the local language, then have a native speaker write your listing title and first 3 bullet points around those terms.

# Identify local-language keywords:
# shopee_keyword_search → top keywords by search volume for your category
# Filter by language to find the terms your buyers actually use

The Categories Where Cross-Border Works Best

Not all categories are cross-border viable. Based on Shopee category data:

High feasibility: Electronics accessories, phone cases, home organization, basic kitchen tools, simple fitness accessories, stationery, basic apparel. These categories have standardized products, low return rates, and price sensitivity that favors overseas sourcing.

Medium feasibility: Beauty and personal care, pet supplies, baby products, small home appliances. These require more careful compliance checking (product safety certifications) but have strong demand.

Low feasibility: Large furniture, fresh food, fragile items, high-return-rate categories (fashion apparel with sizing variation), regulated products (medical devices, supplements). The logistics cost, return rate, or regulatory burden makes cross-border unviable.

Is It Worth It?

Cross-border selling on Shopee is not a passive income strategy. It requires: category research in a market you do not know, keyword optimization in a language you may not speak, pricing strategy for consumers with different spending power, and logistics coordination across borders.

But the reward is access to a market of 350+ million monthly active users — with significantly less seller competition than Amazon US. For sellers who are willing to invest the time in understanding the data before committing inventory, Shopee represents one of the last major e-commerce markets where new entrants can still compete without a seven-figure ad budget.
